Video Production Overview

Throughput my year so far in video, I have had truly a great time. I really enjoy the editing process of videos and plan on making some fun shorts in my own time. During my time in my class I have learned many things, and this is shown through my works, that I will be going over.
First Video we did was a PSA about a subject. I chose the subject of pushing in your chairs, and here was the result.

Overall it is a funny enjoyable video. It was fun to make and was a good introduction into the class. There was still flaws though that needed to be worked out while filming, such as camera angles and certain shots. There could have also been a better production value, and work on jump cuts. Although there were problems, it was my first project and it taught me a lot about shooting and editing. In the end it only took a day to create, so if I were to go back and re do it, I could do it better.
The next project I want to talk about is my feature story about Zach and his air soft passion. This was really my first introduction into a more serious aspect of filming, which was the feature story.  The format of this story is noticeably more serious and informative.

I received lots of positive feedback on this project. I liked it so much because instead of using the six shot system, it was a more point of view angle, which was different and interesting. It took a while to make because shooting took a whole day, and editing took about two days. So it was a tough project, but it turned out nice in the end. If I could go back and change something though, it would be the camera. I used a go pro to record, which was fine, and turned out nice, but I did not use the correct settings on the camera, so thats why it isn't full screen. In the end though I enjoyed this project  and had a fun time making it, as well as the fact that it taught me a lot about production value, and also editing. It also let me learn more about proper clip placement in order to from a story.
My next feature story is probably the one I'm most proud of. It is my feature story over Tyler and his passion for photography.

For this project I took all of my past experiences and lessons and compiled them into one video. I ended up getting positive feedback on it, with the only main complaint being the lack of close up shots. I went back afterwards and tried to add in some more, so it turned out better in the revision. In this video you can also tell how proficient I have become with editing versus in the beginning of the year. It was my favorite project, and there is still things wrong with it, but there is also a lot of great aspects in it. It took about three days in total to film then edit, but in the end it was worth it.
My final project for this semester was my news story. The news story is more up beat and fun. It has a totally different feel and also style from the feature story style.

It was fun to make and lots of fun to put together. There wasn't really much feedback on it since it was the end of the year. Only that it was good. You can really feel the mood difference in this news story versus the feature story. Overall it was lots of fun to make, but lots of work. It took about two days with filming and editing. It was really a test of editing because there was so much that had to be done in order to get that kind of interview to interview feel. In the end it is a fun video that was a blast to make. If it taught me anything though, is that make sure you are doing everything as efficiently as possible when editing, or else you make it five times harder on yourself.
When in class, if we weren't reviewing others works, I was working myself. I always made sure to work very hard and get the job done. I also wanted something that I would be proud of, so my work drive was always full. When I wasn't working on videos though, I was mainly working on Blogging and keeping up to date in the class. When I had finished all of that, then I had fun and conversed with fellow film students.
What I loved most about this semester was the introduction to editing, and the amounts of time we got to edit. It got me really interested into the editing process, and I have even done some of my own projects after the exposure. The only thing I would change about it is the blogging. Sometimes I feel that a intellectual conversation is better than typing it out. What I do hope for as well is going away from feature stories and starting to go into entrainment videos, because thats where I excel. In the end though I had a great time and can't wait to continue next semester.
