What makes a good feature story?
A feature story is a video that is meant to tell a story while creating emotion about the subject, either happiness, sadness, or anger. However you can not get that emotion if the video isn't up to par with the story, so the question comes, how can you make a good feature story?
In order to make a good feature story first you need good questions. Without the right questions the video will seem split up and divided, as well as draw attention away from the story itself. So after you have the right questions(for an interesting topic), make sure you record the interview with a high quality camera and mike, so that way it looks professional. Also make sure to get lots of b-roll of the topic, so that way if you do a voiceover, you can have that footage for the background. When shooting all footage, it is important to have good lighting. If you have good lighting it will make the video more appeasing to view, and draw in more attention. When shooting the b-roll, it is important to also utilize the 6 shot system. So that way you can have a variety of interesting shots to use. When recording the audio, it is nice to try and get the same even volume for everything, so try your best when recording to get the mic at the same distance every time, or go back while editing and manually adjust the audio to match the rest of the video. When putting together the video in post, make sure that it makes sense and flows together, especially match up the voiceover and interview so that way they flow. It is also usually best to start the voiceover with a strong intro, not just jumping into the topic. Then after a strong intro, go into the story and details, finally end it with a few last remarks and sign out. Now all this depends on if you have acquired a good pic or not, something that will spark emotion from the subjects, either happiness or sadness or in-between, and even better if its both. Now that you have the formula for a good story go out there and put one together for the world to see and feel.
